Tour Code: NCP05

This 4 day self-drive holiday is the perfect way to discover the delights of the Deep South. The soil here is rich in iron oxide turning the ground a rich shade of crimson. It’s a primitive, almost frontier feel and when you come here, you’ll have a sense of how the great explorers felt when they stumbled upon this island.

Day 1: Noumea - Port Boise (80km / 1h)

Pick up your rental car from your hotel and start your journey into the heart of the Great South. You might want to take a picnic lunch with you (not included) as you head towards the Mouirange Pass, which is a great place to admire the Southern countryside as it rolls away below you.

The must-sees of Great South:

  • Blue River Park: This is the most popular park in New Caledonia, undoubtedly the most incredible one. Located in the south of the Grande Terre, the Blue River Park promises a truly exotic scenery in a very unusual setting. Nature here has not changed for millions of years!

  • Waterfalls of the La Madeleine: At the heart of the Grand Sud (Far South), and deep in the provincial reserve of the same name, in the Plaine des Lacs (Plain of Lakes), and nearby the Blue River Provincial Park, the La Madeleine waterfalls and the botanical path that leads to them give you a rich and beautiful environment for a walk.

  • The Yaté Dam: Within the magnificent Great South region, known for its big open spaces, preserved nature and red soil, the Yaté Dam and its lake are simply gigantic. The dam, 45 metres high and 641 metres long is located 160 metres above sea level. The huge lake is approximately 40 Km2. An impressive and unmissable experience in the South of New Caledonia.

  • Cap N'Dua: Found on the tip of the Great South, Cap N'Dua is a natural reserve nestled between land and sea. Richly biodiverse, the area offers breathtaking views of the lagoon and open sea. There is a viewing area with facilities allowing visitors to gaze at the horizon on the lookout for the humpback whales that come to reproduce in the region each year.

  • Prony Village: Meticulously restored by enthusiasts, the now deserted village of Prony occupies a unique position in the history of New Caledonia. Indeed, in and of itself, it illustrates three historic phases: the penal colony, the wood industry and the early stages of mining on the Caillou (“pebble”), as the Grande Terre is affectionately known.
